Some will remember Hamburg as the sports city of Germany that it used to be. The gateway to the world held every ball, opened the way to success for elite athletes, sent visitors from all over the world to the visitors gallery. Hamburg at its best had 817 sports clubs and 585 thousand members, hosts the Cyclassics and the World Triathlon and – finally – the Ironman again this year. Yes, there were setbacks with bankruptcies and resignations in handball, volleyball and ice hockey. Yes, there were deep hits with the relegation of the football/soccer team.
